I know that this may surprise some, but the word, "Scripture" in 2 Tim. 3:16 doesn't mean the Bible, especially the writings of law in the Old Covenant, certainly not the Ten Commandments! The word, "Scripture" in the Greek, according to Strongs, means "Document." The second meaning is, "Holy Writ (Holy Writ's dictionary meaning is "Christian writings....not Jewish writings)." The third meaning means, "Scripture."
Now here is what is very interesting about this.....Paul is in no way suggesting that the Old Covenant Law is "useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work." Paul IS NOT speaking about the Law, the Ten Commandments or the writings of the Old Testament! To suggest other than this is emphatically stating that there is a great discrepancy in Paul's teachings! Why? One only needs to look in 2 Cor. 3: 7-18 to see what Paul teaches in regards to the Old. In verse 7 he says, "The old way, with laws etched in stone, LED TO DEATH...." And then about the new he states in verse 9, "If the old way, WHICH BRINGS CONDEMNATION, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way, WHICH MAKES US RIGHT WITH GOD! Then in verse 11 he sates that, "the old way HAS BEEN replaced." So, there is absolutely zero way that Paul was speaking about the old form of Law in the Old Testament when he wrote 2 Timothy 3 16!!!
What is the "Scripture" that Paul was speaking of in this passage? The answer is found in 1 Thessalonians chapter 2: 13, "Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message FROM US, you didn't think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as THE VERY WORD OF GOD - WHICH, OF COURSE, IT IS. And this word continues to work in you who believe. You know, I never hear people teaching on this subject, but is is so very important, especially when it comes to our relationship with the Bible! So, Paul is saying that his teachings, his writings are the "word of God." Why is he saying this? It is due to the fact that after Paul's conversion he spent 3 years in Arabia being taught New Covenant truth by Jesus Himself! So, Paul is effect teaching the teachings of Jesus who is God! Paul repeats the teachings of Christ, therefore he is teaching the Word!
OK...back to 2 Timothy 3: 16-17....Here is Larry's translation of these verses: "All of my teaching and my letters are inspired by God and they (not the Old Covenant Law or writings of much of the Old Testament) are useful to teach what is true and make us realize what is wrong in our lives. My teaching and my letters will correct us when we are wrong and teach us to do what is right. God is using my letters, my teaching, which is the very word of God (1 Thes. 2:13) to prepare his people to do every good work."
So...there you have my rant on a Wed. morning.
