Have We Been Dumbed Down?

Last night one of my Facebook Friends posted the following quote on his timeline, "The true church lives and moves and has its being in prayer!" The quote came from Leonard Ravenhill, a popular revivalist from a past generation.  In cutting to the chase here I'd like to repeat what I wrote my Facebook Friend, "I thought the true church lives and moves and has its being in Christ!"  Now, if you cannot see the difference in these two quotes I guess I'd suggest that you read this blog no further.  However, if you can see the vast difference between these two quotes, then you too are understanding what the wonderful New Covenant is all about!

Folks, if prayer is the key to the being of the Church, then we are all in trouble!  Yet, Religion seems to make prayer just another thing we do in order to please God.  See, here is the great problem with Ravenhill's quote, How much prayer is enough?  What happens if I miss a day of prayer, what follows?  The answer is obviously, fear shame and condemnation as none of us can measure up!

Religion is always trying to get us to jump over the bar.  When we are able to accomplish that task, the bar is raised.  In understanding the true New Covenant, the bar no longer exists...Christ jumped it for us, once and for all time.  "It is finished!" He emphatically said!

I hate to say this, but I feel that it is imperative that I do....Leonard Ravenhill's statement is false doctrine!  That's right, it is not correct in light of all that Christ did for us on the cross!  The Church has been "dumbed down" over several centuries and we have become performance orientated and no longer depend upon the finished works of Christ!  Folks...please remember...The Cross is enough!  Glory!

You may be totally surprised by all of the other doctrines that we have believed in just because some noted minister made a statement!  I don't care who says it, but any statement, that would even suggest that prayer is the key to the Church's existence is false, it just plain is!

Duck Dynastry Controversy

I've stayed out of the Duck Dynasty bro-ha-ha so far, and I'm not planning on getting too involved in it, other than stating this... God loves all gays! And...it's not qualified by something like this...."God loves all gays but not their sin." Here is the reason why.... all sin, for all of mankind was completely eradicated by the powerful, wonderful, life-giving blood of Jesus Christ! Two people within the last 5 minutes messaged me and stated something like this...."Phil Robertson does not understand grace." Know what....I agree!

So Is Grace Just Another Fad?

I hear this all of the time......"OK Larry,  you are so excited about all of this 'grace stuff' and you don't know that it's just another fad running through the Church!"  My answer is simple....NO WAY!

I've been in the ministry since 1976 and I have seen fads come and go, numerous times.  I have been involved in the spiritual warfare movement, the revival movement, the house of prayer movement, the faith movement, the healing movement, the prophetic movement, the apostolic movement, the River movement, the gifts of the Spirit movement, the house church movement,  etc., etc., etc.  Guess what?  They have all run their course and the Church still is lacking and begging God for more.  As Revivalists, Corinne and I faced our greatest frustrations when we would minister in a church, see wonderful transformation take place in the lives of the people, leave to go on to other churches and ministries, come back a few months later and not see one bit of lasting, remaining results of our ministry in that church.  We often asked ourselves, in frustration, "Are we really making a difference?"

Currently we are in our 3rd year of teaching New Covenant Grace in our church in Citrus County, Florida.  The results have been outstanding with lasting transformation taking place within the lives of our people.  Those who were very weak in their faith now are spiritual giants.  Some actually going out in ministering themselves.  I may sound like I'm bragging here, but our church, New Covenant Grace Fellowship of Citrus County, FL, (www.ncgrace.com) is a powerful, very healthy church.  People are leaving their old flesh lives behind and entering into the righteous, holy lives that Jesus died for them to have.  I'm enjoying it...totally!

For those who think that Grace is a fad, I'd just like to state that they really do not understand what true Grace really is.  Grace is not a fad, it is not a "movement," it is not even a "message!"  Rather it is Christ Himself!  Jesus is the Grace of God!  The real good news is that He is not going anywhere!  He's not leading us into just another fad doctrine and then 3 months later lead us into something else.  I like telling people that there will never be another New Covenant.  This one is it!  And...it's getting better all the time as the Holy Spirit brings us deeper revelations of this life of victory.

Here is Paul's take on this whole thing...Romans 6: 17-18 (NLT), "Thank God!  Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you.  Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living."  No Grasshopper...Grace isn't going any where!  It's not just another religious fad!  Rather it is the life transforming Gospel of Jesus Christ!  Glory!

Grace and peace!

Is the Bible Really the Word of God?

Many within today's  "Grace Movement," of which I'm fully involved in, feel that the Bible is not the Word of God.  So at the very onset of this blog post I have to emphatically state that I do not agree!  My take is that the Bible is the Word of God, and again, it is not!  Now how is that for a politically correct statement?

Please allow me to clarify my position.  Those who do not believe that the Bible is the Word of God point out that it is Jesus who is the Word, not a book.  To this I agree!  Jesus is the Word of God according to John 1: 1, (NLT) "In the beginning the Word already existed.  The Word was with God, and the Word was God."  Jesus is that Word!  He is the One we worship, totally and never a Book!  I agree with this point 100%

However, I understand where the people who oppose the Bible being the Word are coming from.  In most cases they have been in bad, religious churches and organizations and have had mis-interpreted Bible passages forced down their throats!

If a person reads the Bible from an Old Covenant mindset only trouble will result, most often in the form of fear, shame and condemnation.  However, when one sees the Bible from the New Covenant of Grace mindset, only wonderful freedom with ensue!

I have established 4 Basic Rules of Bible Interpretation.  I've gone over them in detail in past posts, so I'll only list the Rules here.  For deeper information on them I have included the Rules as an entire chapter of my book, "The River is Here: My Journey into New Covenant Grace." (order book at: www.larrysilverman.com) Here are the Rules: 1.  Know who the writer is writing to. 2. Read the Bible in it's proper context. 3.  Do not make doctrine out of obscure, stand alone verses of Scripture.  4. Do not make doctrine out of directional verses of Scripture.

Another important item in correct Bible interpretation is to understand the time-line of books of the Bible.  For instance the Book of James, thought to be the first book of the New Testament written, was written about seven years prior to Paul bringing the revelation of New Covenant Grace back to the Apostles at Jerusalem.  So James, at the time of the writing of his book, did not understand the fullness of Grace.  Even the words of Jesus in the four Gospels, in most cases, do not apply to you and I living in the New Covenant.  I know that this statement will really get me in trouble, but it is true!  Who was Jesus writing to?  He was writing to people still living under the Law as the New Covenant did not begin until His death, the shedding of His wonderful blood.

As God was bringing me into the revelations of New Covenant Grace, I saw from the onset that the writings of Paul in his epistles were essential in understanding the revelation.  I was completely intrigued by Paul's words in Galatians 1: 8-9, "Let God's curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News (Gospel) than the one we preached to you.  I say again what we have said before; if anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed."  Wow!  Now those are pretty harsh words.  Yet, I find that many within the "Common Church" (a term used by a friend of mine in Sacramento, Don Quattlebum) are preaching just about everything other than Paul's Gospel!

OK, let's take another look at Paul.  This time I Thessalonians 2: 13, "Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn't think of our words as mere human ideas.  You accepted what we said as the very word of God-which, of course, it is.  And this word continues to work in you who believe."

Friends, Paul considered his writings the word of God!  I do too!  For it is this very Word that has completely transformed my life and the lives of those I minister to!  Glory!

Grace and peace!
