Today is Super Bowl Sunday, and sorry to say the Cowboys are not playing! However a side note for my Texas Friends, neither are the Detroit Lions. Now that's a surprise! (Larry is sad!)
I'm told that there are more potato chips and dip sold in the U.S. for today's game than for any other event all year long. I hear that the TV ratings will be at an all time high this afternoon and evening. The TV network airing the Big Game will make a fortune on multi-million dollar commercials. Later today, after the Giants win...oops.. I mean the best team wins, the hoopla will subside until the talk begins again at the work place water cooler the first thing Monday morning!
To give you an idea of how big the Super Bowl is, even Corinne enjoys watching this game yearly! She's not too big a fan of football, like one of her questions this afternoon probably will be, "Who hit the last home run?" grin!
A few years ago we gathered with a group of church members from one of our churches in California and watched The Game together. We ate a ton of junk food, screamed and hollered for our teams, laughed until we were totally silly at some of the million dollar commercials, ended up going our separate ways, totally having the time of our lives! We had a blast!
The interesting thing about that time together was that we were the Church meeting together, building strong, lasting relationships together. To this day, several of the people present at that Super Bowl Party remain close friends of ours!
Could it be that this is what the Church is to look like?
In the formation of a new business there are 3 hard, fast rules that have to be followed in order to have a successful business. These rules are, "Location, Location and Location!" If you have a right location you can sell anything to anybody! Likewise there are 3 hard, fast rules that work along with planting a successful church, "Relationship, Relationship and Relationship!"
It's been said that the Early Church (Church of the First Century) worked harder on their relationships than they did their theology. They met daily, ate together all of the time, even shared their wealth with one another. No one in those churches every went without food, lodging and living essentials!
Church people today are just too busy for things like this. They will make the Sunday morning "service," but please don't ask too much more of them as there is no time in the schedule for that. Oh how we need to be forming lasting relationships with others within the Body of Christ! One day we will see that we actually need them.
On Super Bowl Sunday, please allow me to share some great revelation with you. It's found in I John....
